Does "content" still matter?

Updated: Sep 4, 2020

It would be true joyful irony if Black America destroyed the Democratic Party which has historically and currently so abused them.

It is an interesting strategy that the Democrats, corporations and the entertainment industry, including sports has taken and in some ways it seems to be working, but is it? First some numbers.

If you remove hispanics whites comprise 60.8% of US population, Hispanic comprise 18.5% Blacks make up 13.4% , and other ethnicities make up the remaining 7.3% of the US population. When it comes to voting the disparity is a bit more pronounced. According to PEW Research the 2016 electorate was 74% white, 10% black, 10% hispanic with the balance, 6% being other ethnicities.

The recent social narrative infers that 60.8% of the US population IE: markets and voters are racist. Obviously this overstates the case, but also obviously the vast majority of people of any race know that this narrative overstates the reality of their lives. A very small percentage of people actually believe that all whites are racist yet a political party and most of corporate America have chosen to "buy in" to and promote this untrue narrative. The term white privilege sounds so much better than racist.

The question then becomes, will there be a backlash against this unfair representation of the majority of the country? Right now the answer is a resounding yes and no. Some entities that promote this narrative are taking a hit for their "stand" the NBA being an example. But the NBA has been losing its audience for years. It seems that the more that Lebron James becomes the face of the league the more it loses fans.

In a nation as large and prosperous as the United States it is hard to see slow erosion of support for large institutions, but it is there. The new saying "get woke go broke" has more examples than the "woke" media will admit, not the least about themselves. Fox is the undisputed champion of cable news for a reason, and is beginning to take on over air networks in viewership while alternative news outlets are springing up like spring flowers.

Perhaps the best indicator of a not so publicized shift away from the left's prefered fairy tale is with the alleged grand puba of racist in the "America is a racist country" narrative, Donald Trump. If polls are to believed, a big if, blacks themselves are not buying into it. At least as far as Trump is concerned. Consider the fairly reputable Emerson Poll that just came out:

Biden leads with all minority groups, albeit by different ranges. Biden leads with Asians 76% to 11%, Blacks/African Americans 77% to 19%, and Hispanic voters break for Biden 60% to 37%. White voters break for President Trump 56% to 41%.

I am not sure about Asians, but in every other one of those ethnicities Trump polls higher than his final 2016 vote. In 2016 he received 6% of the Black vote, 28% of the Hispanic vote and 54% of the white vote. If his 2020 vote totals in those three groups are the same as those poll numbers, he wins in a landslide. Frankly I cannot see how Emerson has him down by 2% in the poll, probably an oversampling of New York and California white liberals. But the most telling number is African American. How, after all the talk, can racist Trump with all his racist followers be tripling his 2016 support from blacks? Without even looking at Rasmussen which has a Trump "bias" we can look at the Zogby polling and believe me James Zogby hates Trump. Is hate too strong a term? This is what he tweeted recently.

Trump warns about “Biden’s America.” But the police impunity, racism, division, & the weaponization of hatred we see unfolding across the US is what “Trump’s America” looks like. At this rate, we won’t be able to survive another 4 years of this madness.

Yet his research firm, which he is the CEO of, found these results;

This is in line with numbers that Rasmussen has been reporting for months. Wonder why Democrats are scared? But more important if the these polls come close to the support that Trump is getting from Blacks, what does that do to the America is racist narrative being promoted now by institutional America? Trump has somehow managed to have the best approval rating among people of color for a Republican in decades while being, as Bernie Sanders says, "the most racist President in American history." This of course also makes his supporters....racist. Yet as they impune not only Trump but a large swath of America as being racist, the Democrats and media call Trump divisive. Projection?

Here is a the kicker though, while Republicans, especially Trump supporters are portrayed as uneducated white men, Trump won with white women against Hillary by the way, in 2016 Trump did better with non-white college graduates than he did with non-whites with no college degree, by 8 points. Though he still lost significantly in both categories the difference is telling. In other words the more educated people of color are, the less likely they are to buy into the narrative. There is a lesson there, and I think the left sees it and their policies and their rhetoric shows their racism.

Back to our original theme, most racist proudly proclaim their racism, I've known a few in my life and they have never been bashful about it. For everyone else the idea of being labeled a racist is abhorrent and will in most cases cause, first a self-examination of their attitudes and beliefs and a determination to be more understanding. If white privilege is real, which in some ways it is, it is far more the result of historical circumstances than individual choice. After all a person has no more control over being born white than one does of being born black. That is what made the true civil rights movement as opposed to the current abortion of it so wise and true.

“I look to a day when people will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character.”

The current "movement" throws Dr. King's words right out the window and replaces it with a racist ideology which says that because of the color of your skin (white) you are a lesser and immoral individual.

Because the left and corporate marketing have never been known to be subtle when they think they have found something to advance their interest, America is being baptised in the muddy waters of implied guilt. The question is, is America buying what they are selling? To a large degree we will know come November 3rd. Let me just make some observations on possible scenarios and what they probably will mean to the country.

  • If Trump receives anything less than 7% of the Black vote he probably loses and we are headed towards a serious crisis.

  • If Trump receives between 7%-12% of the Black vote he will win and the Democrats will have to at least look at structural changes, but little will change.

  • If Trump wins between 12%-20% of the Black vote, Democrats as a party will begin to undergo a complete makeover and Trump's mandate will be almost absolute.

  • If Trump wins over 20% of the Black vote, in short, America is saved.

A significant shift in Black vote of 14% or more will not only demolish the current Democratic Party, it will shatter multiple narrative streams prevalent in America today. It would be true joyful irony if Black America destroyed the Democratic Party which has historically and currently so abused them.

The caveat, there is always a caveat, is Kanye West. What impact he will have on the Black vote will depend on how much and where he gets it. But almost under any scenario, his candidacy helps Trump. Few Trump African American supporters will switch to vote for West, the same is not so likely for those who may have voted for Biden. If more Black come out to vote than would have due to his candidacy it only improves their overall impact and the results of the election becomes more meaningful.

In the end, this election will be decided by Americans, black, white, and brown on whether they believe in the America as envisioned by MLK, or the one being portrayed to us by people and institutions who cannot seem to move past, our past.

Just before Russia's invasion of Ukraine took over the news cycle, a very strange though welcome development was beginning to take place....
